Hello Fellow Track Athletes and Parents,

We wanted to provide a bit of information regarding the situation that occurred at practice yesterday. We had some vandalism occur during practice, and as a result, the coaches are in the process of investigating the issue.

The coaching staff will be holding a meeting today after school in order to find solutions to resolve the situation. We are hoping to find solutions to ensure that all students are being respectful, responsible, and safe while they are under our supervision.

The meet has been cancelled for the day, and we will post more information as we are able.

Your athlete should be prepared to participate in track photos on Monday afternoon (Apr 29th), at which time we will also hold a team meeting in order to set our expectations moving forward.

Please email any of us with any more questions,

Leslie Johnston

Our district is currently collecting information to assist in our annual strategic planning process.  This information will inform our District LCAP, and your feedback helps us target our efforts and allocate our resources to best fit our students and school community.  Please take just a couple of minutes to answer our annual survey.  The information is very valuable to us, and the results will be reported in our strategic plans later this spring.

The survey is available in three languages: English, Spanish and Vietnamese and accessed using the links below.  The survey window will close on Friday, April 26th.  We appreciate and value your partnership!

We know it’s early, but here is information about Graduation, 2019

Things to know about the 2019 Herman Intermediate Graduation

ALL STUDENTS WILL ATTEND SCHOOL JUNE 13th 8:05 - 10:30 AM

• Date & Time:  The Herman Intermediate Graduation is on Thursday, June13th at 12pm on the field at Oak Grove High School located at 285 Blossom Hill Road .  Students need to arrive at 11:30am sharp to line up.

• Parking:  The on-site parking is primarily for disabled parking.  Most families will need to park on the street so we suggest carpooling whenever possible.  San Jose Police Department will be directing traffic and assisting with the parking around campus.

• Drop-off & Pick-up:  Students need to be dropped off by 11:30am dressed in their gowns.  Students may not be carrying anything with them such as flowers, balloons, cell phones, books, hats, etc.  All items will be taken away.  Students can be picked up after they exit the ceremony.

• Seating:  All graduates will be seated in chairs on the field provided by the school.  All spectators will be seated in the bleachers surrounding the field. There are a limited amount of disabled seating that will be available on a first come first serve basis.

• Dress Code:  Royal blue gowns are required.  Students should be dressed appropriately under their gowns.  Students will have to walk a fair amount across grass and climb stairs so their shoes need to be appropriate.  Red shoes and clothing are not allowed.  See the school handbook for all dress code rules which apply.  Students who purchased gowns will receive them on Wednesday, June 6th.

• Conduct:  Graduation is an academic acknowledgement of your child’s accomplishment.  No horns, noise makers of any kind can be used during the ceremony.  Balloons are not allowed and will be removed by security.

• Professional photographs will be available for purchase at the website listed inside the program.

Recently the neighborhood surrounding Herman has experienced break-ins, robbery and vandalism over the weekend and late at night.  San Jose PD and our District office are aware of the events in our area but none of these crimes pertain to our students or school. Herman students and staff have NOT been a part of the events that have taken place.  The events have taken place after hours or on weekends and never impacted our campus safety.  In the event that something happened during school hours or to our students, we would follow our safety protocol and notify our community directly. Thank you.

It's time to celebrate our Herman/AdVENTURE Intermediate Students of the Month award winners!  We are excited that these students have been selected for academic and student success. The student will be notified by their nominating teacher. Additionally, I will send out an invitation to the luncheon on Monday for the Wednesday, March 13, 2019 event.

This month we will be hosting a student awards luncheon on March 13th, 2019 for each of the students being honored for January's Student of the Month. Award winners are able to bring a friend with them to the luncheon.  We will be hosting lunch and serving pizza, peanut free desserts, individual bags of chips, fruit or salad, and water. It should really be a great time. We always want to create an environment where we can celebrate our student's success here at Herman and AdVENTURE.

All award winners will be receiving a Student of the Month award certificate, Herman felt flag, Patriots pencil, and a free book. Any help you might be able to provide in making this lunch extra special is very much appreciated.

Internet and Social Media Awareness

The internet is a growing part of our lives, and students are being exposed to a wide range of content as they work and play online.  As a school we are continuing to educate students about the risks posed by irresponsible use of the internet.  We encourage every parent to be a part of proactive efforts to help our youth use their social media accounts in a safe and responsible way.  Students also play an important role in alerting their parents and school administrators to any suspicious online behavior that they witness.  Here are a few tips for students and parents to keep in mind as they spend time online.

Students

  • Don’t make irresponsible, frightening or threatening posts on your online accounts as they will likely result in serious legal and school disciplinary action.
  • NEVER forward or re-post an inappropriate or threatening post or message that you see or receive online. Instead, report that post and/or message to an adult and/or school staff member immediately.
  • Encourage your friends to be responsible internet and social media users.

Parents

  • Be familiar with your child’s online activity, including all social media accounts. Don’t be afraid to “follow” or “friend” your kids on their personal social media channels.
  • Talk to your kids regularly about their use of the internet and social media, and create a safe environment for your children to report internet activity or online posts/messages that make them uncomfortable.
  • Be aware of the consequences (legal and school-based) of inappropriate use of the internet, including forwarding or re-posting of inappropriate or threatening content, to your child and your family.
  • Report inappropriate or threatening online content immediately to law enforcement or school staff.

Parents – Please be respectful of traffic and signs when dropping off and picking up students.  There are specific lanes in the front of school drive-through area for dropping off/picking up, passing and for making left and right turns upon exiting.  We also ask that students not be dropped off in the middle of the street, as this is a safety issue.  Thank you, we appreciate your assistance in making this a safe area for our students.
