Internet and Social Media Awareness

The internet is a growing part of our lives, and students are being exposed to a wide range of content as they work and play online.  As a school we are continuing to educate students about the risks posed by irresponsible use of the internet.  We encourage every parent to be a part of proactive efforts to help our youth use their social media accounts in a safe and responsible way.  Students also play an important role in alerting their parents and school administrators to any suspicious online behavior that they witness.  Here are a few tips for students and parents to keep in mind as they spend time online.

Students

  • Don’t make irresponsible, frightening or threatening posts on your online accounts as they will likely result in serious legal and school disciplinary action.
  • NEVER forward or re-post an inappropriate or threatening post or message that you see or receive online. Instead, report that post and/or message to an adult and/or school staff member immediately.
  • Encourage your friends to be responsible internet and social media users.

Parents

  • Be familiar with your child’s online activity, including all social media accounts. Don’t be afraid to “follow” or “friend” your kids on their personal social media channels.
  • Talk to your kids regularly about their use of the internet and social media, and create a safe environment for your children to report internet activity or online posts/messages that make them uncomfortable.
  • Be aware of the consequences (legal and school-based) of inappropriate use of the internet, including forwarding or re-posting of inappropriate or threatening content, to your child and your family.
  • Report inappropriate or threatening online content immediately to law enforcement or school staff.

Parents – Please be respectful of traffic and signs when dropping off and picking up students.  There are specific lanes in the front of school drive-through area for dropping off/picking up, passing and for making left and right turns upon exiting.  We also ask that students not be dropped off in the middle of the street, as this is a safety issue.  Thank you, we appreciate your assistance in making this a safe area for our students.

Hello Math students & parents!!

Throughout the bay area, many math competitions are hosted for middle school students. Participating in these competitions is a fun way to experience math in different ways. There are typically prizes, including money towards college!!

Last school year I brought a group of Adventure students to the MathCounts regional competition held at San Jose State University. The students had a good time attempting various math problems in group and individual settings. While we didn't place very high as a school, all of the students who came expressed how they enjoyed the experience.

On September 29th, the South Bay Math Team is hosting their math competition. This group, SBMT, is a student-led non-profit comprised of High School Students and financial sponsors. The meet will be held at the Union Church of Cupertino, 20900 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino, CA 95014.

You don't have to be a student who gets straight A's in math to participate. The format and types of math is made to be accessible to all students.

From their website: "We strive to make this contest accessible to everyone, regardless of his/her problem solving capabilities. No extra knowledge is expected for mini-events. Your child should just be excited to participate!"

There are two Mini events you can choose as well!!

The Red Rotation will focus on estimation and speed

The Blue Rotation will have challenges with the Escape Room Format and with Rubik's cubes (This one sounds like a lot of fun!!!)

The cost to enter is $15 if you register before September 3rd.

You can get more information and register by visiting their website here:

http://southbaymt.org/index.html

Please let me know if you register for the competition! I would love to meet you there to encourage you!!

Also, any student who participates in the event will get a RARE homework pass for math class. (like...super RARE, as in I've never given Homework passes out until now). This will give you a week off of homework OR Full credit on a Notebook check. Your choice.
